Jackie, my 15-year-old, said, “Mashed potatoes! And the time
Bobbie (our part Shih-tzu puppy) sat at the table with us.” That
was pretty darn funny. Before dinner started, Bobbie jumped up
on my husband’s chair just as he was snapping a photo of us
around the table. Bobbie smiled proudly, flashing her trademark
under-bite, right along with the rest of us. We laugh about that
snaggle-toothed grin every time someone tells the tale.
And from Jess, my college freshman: “Cranberry sauce, and
how you can smell everything cooking even in the morning
when you’re still in bed. And when food is passed around the
table, you make sure what you really like stops in front of you.”
In other words, if no one actually asked for the cranberry sauce,
it would likely stay within Jess’ reach the entire dinner, where she could help herself at will.
